More homeowners are behind on mortgage payments in Minnesota
Are you about to face foreclosure in Minnesota? More Minnesotans are facing foreclosure during these hard economic times. At the end of the third quarter of 2009, 6.5 percent of the mortgages served were either 90 days or more behind the payment or in foreclosure as reported by the Mortgage Bankers Association.
Under this situation, governor of Minnesota came up with new law that makes it possible to delay the sheriff sale giving the people of Minnesota, who are behind their mortgage payments more time to become current on the mortgage.
Previously, Minnesotans have only one option, home owners pay off the entire mortgage within six months or say good bye. But the newly introduced law give the home owners to postpone the sheriff sale for another five months. Under this law, home owners, who pay back the amount they owe during this five months can reinstate their mortgage and cancel the sheriff sale.
This law will be helpful for Minnesotans those who could not make payments due to sudden lose of job. Previously, people have no time to make payments that were living close to the line, unable to make the payments, get foreclosure notice then the sheriff's sale occurs as they don't have time to make rest of the payments and in the end lose the house.
Before this new law was introduced, about 5,000 homes were foreclosed in Minnesota and thousand more were predicted. It the economy continues to worsen, more people will lose their jobs and as a result fall behind their payments and more foreclosures will depress the home values.
To overcome these concerns, President Barack Obama announced $75 billion bailout for home owners facing foreclosure as part of $787 billion economic stimulus package. In an effort to help home owners Obama administration plans to pressure lender in a way to help more people who can't afford their mortgage payments. In this process, treasury department may fine mortgage lenders that aren't putting enough efforts to make loan modification under $75 billion programs.
The goal of this $75 billion making home affordable program is to increase the rate at which the troubled mortgage is converted into new mortgage with lower monthly payments affordable by home owners. It has been reported that by the end of October, nearly 65,000 home owners that are eligible has signed up even the process has been tough.
Under this $75 billion relief program will also benefit lenders as the lender who lower the payments to troubled borrower receive thousands of dollars as incentive but not until those modifications are made permanent. For this reason many mortgage lenders are coming forward to modify the mortgage for qualified home owners.
But with the economy still weak and employers continue to cut jobs, even though mortgage lenders modified the home loans the situation is still worse as the home owners who got their monthly payments reduced more than 20 percent are still falling behind the mortgage payments with in a year again.
